Call to undefined method WP_Query::is_main_query()

I recently got this error when installing a new theme to WordPress. Nothing loaded and I was upset because it was a theme I wanted to use.

Call to undefined method WP_Query::is_main_query()

Don’t panic if you see this error. In my case, all I had to do was upgrade WordPress to the most recent version. After the upgrade everything was fine!

  1. Bang on! And if you can’t upgrade WordPress because the plugin error is preventing you from accessing the admin pages, you can just move the culprit plugin directory from wp-content/plugins to somewhere else temporarily, upgrade WordPress, and then move the directory back to the plugin directory.

    Hope that helps others.

    Cheers,
